CORE OF SUMMER ON THE CUYAHOGA

The Summer on the Cuyahoga program consists of four principal components to connect students to our community.

a little about sotc

Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC) is a unique summer internship program open to students of Case Western Reserve, Colgate, Cornell, Ohio Wesleyan, Smith, University of Chicago and Yale. The program brings together 50-60 students for an intensive summer immersion program designed to help interns explore the professional, civic, and social offerings of the Cleveland area. SOTC offers students challenging internships, community introductions, alumni connections, and group housing for the summer.

Driven by a collaborative effort among local alumni volunteers of the respective institutions, SOTC has attracted recognition as an effective civic development initiative. In partnership with employers and community leaders, the program showcases the region's abundant opportunities to the student participants. The goal is to attract talented graduates for full-time positions in the region.

In the past nine years, SOTC has:

  • Recruited over 160 summer employers offering paid internship positions
  • Secured 509 students for internships, 75% of whom are not from the region originally
  • Attracted over 5,100 students as applicants
  • Resulted in over 65 students accepting permanent positions in Cleveland with more students currently looking for permanent placement

Program Highlights

A summer in Cleveland will be a summer to remember!!! Experience the very best of this major-league Midwestern city. Land a great internship with a great company; enjoy FREE HOUSING; meet students and alums from all over the world; experience a summer filled with fun and enriching events.

Challenging Internships

The cornerstone of the program is high-quality, 8-week and 10-week summer internships (private, nonprofit, and public). The program seeks to offer a wide range of positions to showcase the diversity of employment opportunities here in Northeast Ohio. A few of our past employers include Key Bank, DDR, Lubrizol, The Cleveland Clinic, Medical Mutual of Ohio, and BioEnterprise. New opportunities are offered each year.

The Summer program is followed by a fall and spring campus recruiting initiative for Cleveland employers interested in hiring for full-time positions.

Community Events

The program sponsors a series of programs and events over the summer to enhance the students’ understanding of and experience in Cleveland. Events include discussions with political and business leaders, cultural and social offerings, community service opportunities, and community connections through alumni gatherings.

Local Hosts

Students are paired with local alumni host families to help them adjust to Cleveland, and to serve as additional connections for them to the community. Hosts can serve as models for the students as they demonstrate the balance of work, family, organizational commitments, and civic leadership. Finally, hosts act as recruiters to help bring students back to Northeast Ohio.

Group Housing

To assist students and give the group a sense of special cohesiveness, the program offers free housing for all SOTC interns in Fenn Tower on the campus of Cleveland State University. Group housing on the campus of CSU is available for eight weeks. Students who accept a 10-week internship will be housed with local alums for these additional two weeks in Cleveland.
